Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Pneumonias & nosocomial pneumonias, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections (eg, endometritis), skin & skin structure infections, meningitis, septicaemia. Monotherapy or in combination w/ antiviral or antifungal agent for empiric treatment of presumed infections in adult w/ febrile neutropenia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynaecological infections (eg endometritis), skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV every 8 hr. Nosocomial pneumonias, peritonitis, presumed infections in neutropenic patient, septicaemia 1 g IV every 8 hr. Meningitis 2 g every 8 hr. Childn >3 mth to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg every 8 hr. >50 kg Adult dosage should be used. Meningitis 40 mg/kg every 8 hr. All doses to be given 8 hrly as an IV bolus inj over approx 5 min or by IV infusion over approx 15-30 min.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to β-lactams. Monitor for overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Monitor transaminase & bilirubin levels in patient w/ hepatic disease. History of GI complaints particularly colitis. Avoid use w/ nephrotoxic drugs. Infant <3 mth. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombocythaemia; headache; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain; increase in serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, LDH; rash, pruritus, urticaria; inflammation, pain.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, valproic acid.
